The Cumbria branch of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles have taken on creating a large quilt to celebrate Eamont 927. This will be part of the legacy of the celebrations and will be displayed in one of the Westmorland and Furness buildings in Penrith in future years.

The quilt will complement the Eamont Tapestry and during the creation of both there will be liaison between the creators to compare colour palettes and symbols. However, the two different mediums lend themselves to representing different types of subjects, for example quilting being much better suited to using the Eamont 927 logo.

We have set ourselves the challenge of using only pieces of cloth that we already have in our collections. Thus building the quilt from ‘home grown’ textile and reflecting this century’s views on resilience and re-cycling.
The finished piece will capture the unique sense of place surrounding this historic event, featuring elements such as the two rivers at Eamont Bridge, where the meeting is believed to have taken place, alongside artefacts like the distinctive hogback stones that reflect the period.

Planning the corners of the quilt

Here is the plan of the blocks for the corners of the quilt. The red, white and blue reflecting both the colours of the three main kings Hywel, Athelstan and Constantine plus the eventual unity of the Union Flag.

A trial in cloth

While Region 15W of the Quilters Guild is coordinating the project, the quilt itself will be a true community creation, made by quilters and stitchers from across Cumbria. Whatever your age or experience, we’d love you to be part of this special project, let’s celebrate the birthplace of England with needle, thread and fabric!
