It is planned to form a named footpath from existing Rights of Way and roads to create a walk between the Meeting of the Rivers, site of the Eamont Meeting, and Dacre, the site of Athelstan standing godfather to Constantine’s son. This would be the Athelstan way.
There are already several named ways in the Eamont valley particularly the Eamont Way with the Dalemain Loop. Combined with the Athelstan way this would create several different possible circular walks.
There could also be small loops off the Athelstan Way that could be heritage trails guiding people to the henges in Eamont Bridge and the fort, hall and castle in Brougham. The initially proposed route is as shown but, although it is using all existing rights of way and roads, this needs to be checked for accessibility and safety by the Countryside Access team of Westmorland and Furness. And the exact current route of the paths will need to be agreed with the landowners.
Hence the route as shown is an aspiration and we will update this site with progress if it becomes closer to reality.
