Cumbria Association of Local Councils (CALC) is a private company limited by guarantee (registration number 15107335). It is a membership organisation managed by town/parish councils and parish meetings for their own benefit across the administrative area of Cumbria (116 in Cumberland and 129 in Westmorland and Furness). CALC supports and assists councils in their day-to-day work with advice and training and by representing their interests and promoting their activities to other tiers of government, external organisations and the public.

CALC is delighted to be a supporting partner in the ‘Eamont 927’ project. We are ideally placed to liaise with our local council and parish meeting members and Westmorland and Furness Council’s Museum Services to help develop a ‘parish treasures’ trail of unsung heritage assets found off the usual beaten track.

In January 2026, a CALC forum event on ‘heritage assets’ raised awareness of the evidence left in our local countryside and parish church dedications to explain the movements of our ancestors across seas and along ancient pathways, bringing new ideas, different languages and political change to our land.

The forum highlighted why communities should cherish local legends and how town and parish councils can use ‘section 137’ expenditure or the ‘general power of competence’ to help preserve and celebrate our rich cultural heritage, as part of commemorating ‘Eamont 927’- a pivotal time in the history of our isles.

The ‘parish treasures’ trail is a unique opportunity for smaller communities to preserve and put on record their little-known historical curiosities for the marvel and enjoyment of local residents and visitors alike, before these heritage details are lost beneath the noise and bustle of modern life.
